Evans Plumbing & A/C, Inc. - How a Family Business Has Prospered for 40 Years

Most business owners will tell you that providing great service is a key to their success, and there’s no doubt that service is important in practically any business.

But in the heating, ventilation and air conditioning (or HVAC) business, service is absolutely critical. “You’ve got to take care of your customers in this business,” says J.C. Evans, the founder and president of Evans Plumbing & A/C, Inc. in Hamilton, Miss. “If you don’t, you’re going to have a hard time staying in business very long.”

Three Generations of Family

Evans started Evans Plumbing & A/C 40 years ago after serving in the United States Army. He says he took HVAC classes at night while stationed at Ft. Hood in Texas with the goal of opening an HVAC business one day. After learning the ropes by working for another HVAC business for several years, he opened his own business in 1977 to serve the Hamilton community.

Since then, Evans Plumbing & A/C has grown to about 40 employees, including J.C.’s son Doug, who is now the vice president, and two grandsons, Hayden and Jayce. “Our employees are critical to our success,” says J.C. “Without them and the support they provide, there would be no company.”

J.C. says Doug started going on service calls with him when he was 12 years old and was changing fan units and AC window units by the time he was 15. “Doug learned the value of hard work at an early age, and so are my grandsons,” says J.C. “There’s no special treatment for family members in our business. They start at the bottom to learn all phases of the business, which goes a long way toward instilling a strong service mentality.”

Indeed, Doug is positioned to take over the business once J.C. fully retires. J.C. has handed over day-to-day operations to Doug and says he only gets involved now when advising on a big job or helping to make big decisions affecting the business. “I plan on spending a lot of time at our new lake house now,” J.C. quips.

“It was a long road getting to this point but it was worth it,” says Doug. “Now I’m looking forward to helping take the business to the next level. And we have a great team in place to help get us there.”

Letting Go of the Reins

J.C. notes the company has grown considerably over the past five years since Doug has taken a more active role in management. “Our continued focus on service has enabled us to keep growing as management transitions to the next generation,” he says.

According to Doug, Evans Plumbing & A/C’s business is split about evenly between commercial and residential customers, while about 80 percent of the business comes from HVAC work and 20 percent from plumbing work. “You have to keep your service techs busy,” he says.

Evans Plumbing & A/C is an authorized Trane dealer offering a complete line of indoor comfort equipment. They provide 24/7 emergency service — including one time when J.C. serviced a customer’s broken heater on a freezing cold Christmas day. “It’s this kind of service that results in loyal, long-term customers,” he says.

There From the Beginning

Cadence Bank (or its predecessors) is the only bank J.C. has ever worked with. “I borrowed $10,000 from the bank to help me start the business, and I’m proud to say we’ve never had to borrow operating capital again,” he says. Over the years, Cadence Bank has provided equipment and expansion loans to Evans Plumbing & A/C. The business also utilizes the bank’s treasury management and wealth management services and business checking accounts.

“You’ve got to have a good banking relationship to be successful in business, especially in a rural area like this,” says J.C. “I can call my banker anytime and he answers the phone, and when I walk in the bank, everybody knows me. Cadence Bank provides the same kind of service to us that we provide to our customers, and I’m sure this is a big key to their success, too.”

Evans Plumbing & A/C, Inc., is located at 40502 Old Highway 45 South in Hamilton, Miss.
