Jerry W. Powell Installed as 2018-2019 Chairman of the Alabama Bankers Association

BIRMINGHAM, Ala., June 14, 2018 — Cadence Bancorporation (NYSE:  CADE) and Cadence Bank, N.A. are pleased to announce that Jerry W. Powell, Executive Vice President, General Counsel and Secretary, is serving as the 2018-2019 Chairman of the Alabama Bankers Association (ABA). His installment took place at the ABA’s 125th Annual Convention and Trade Show held in Fairmont Southampton, Bermuda on June 3-6.

 

The mission of the Alabama Bankers Association is to provide effective representation and advocacy for Alabama banks, and to serve and improve the banking industry in a continually changing environment. The Association exists to protect and promote the political, legal and business interests of banks operating in Alabama, and to unite its membership through forums for collective industry action. Through working to create stronger local economies and banks, the Association helps Alabamians achieve greater prosperity.

 

Powell stated, “I look forward to leading the Alabama Bankers in these times of transition in our industry. Our state is blessed with strong banks of all sizes that are led by talented and dedicated managers.”

 

Powell is the chief legal officer for the holding company and the bank, providing a full range of legal and regulatory compliance advice. Immediately prior to joining the bank, Powell was special counsel in the Banking and Financial Service Practice Group at Jones Walker, a regional full-service law firm. Prior to that, Powell served as General Counsel and Secretary of BBVA Compass Bancshares, Inc. and BBVA Compass Bank, and its predecessors, a regional bank holding company and multi-state bank, for more than 25 years.

 

A native of Montgomery, Ala., he is a graduate of the public school system and a cum laude graduate of Birmingham-Southern College with a B.A. in political science. Powell also graduated with honors from the University of Alabama School of Law, where he was a member of the Alabama Law Review staff, recipient of a Farrah Order of Jurisprudence Scholarship, a Hugo Black Scholar and a member of The Order of the Coif.  

 

Powell is a member of the American Bar Association and the Alabama Bar Association, and is highly involved in civic and community affairs. He serves on the Board of Directors of AIDS Alabama, a nonprofit corporation providing housing and support services to the HIV/AIDS-infected community. Powell is active with various committees of the United Way of Central Alabama and was a founding director of Magic Moments, an organization dedicated to fulfilling the wishes of terminally ill children. He also served as the Chair of the Alabama Law School Alumni Society.

 

Powell lives in Birmingham with his wife and they have two adult children who both are attorneys in the banking industry.
