Cadence Bank Awards Woodson Leadership Academy Student

HOUSTON, Jan. 30, 2014 — Cadence Bank is pleased to announce Ayzia Lathan of Woodson K-8 Leadership Academy as the local level winner of the 2014 Lights, Camera, Save! video contest, sponsored by the American Bankers Association.

To help students to commit to a life-long savings habit, Cadence Bank invited teens to educate themselves and their peers about the value of saving and using money wisely by entering the video contest held in November 2013.

“Students who have a savings account earmarked for education are more likely to enroll in college,” said Danielle Kernell, marketing communications director for Cadence Bank. “And saving has been linked to an improved outlook on life, greater social engagement and decreased risk-taking behaviors.” At Cadence, we understand the value of financial literacy and the role our bankers can play in educating local communities on good financial management. Sponsoring this contest was a great way to encourage teens to start saving early and take an active role in their own financial education.”

Lathan’s video focused on the value of saving from a young age. It described how accumulating savings and interest can grow your money over time so it is there when you need it for important things like a college education. The video was reviewed by a team of financial experts at Cadence and chosen as the winning entry for its relevant messages and creative execution.

“This contest provided an opportunity for an enriching technology experience coupled with a strong educational component,” said Barbara Shelby-Roberts, 21st Century program director at Woodson. “Ayzia really impressed us with her awareness of the importance of thoughtful spending and how savings can impact her future.”

For her winning entry, Lathan received a $1,000 prize from Cadence Bank to help further her savings goal of paying for college for herself and her sisters. Her video also has advanced to the national level of the competition, where it is being reviewed by a panel of experts selected by the American Bankers Association. National winners will be announced by March 2014.

Woodson Leadership Academy also received a donation from Cadence of $500 toward classroom technology or audio/visual equipment for the school.
